WEIRTON — The top-seeded Madonna baseball team made a statement in its postseason opener against Paden City.

Madonna got off to a fast start, and an 18-run third inning broke the game wide open as the Blue Dons shut out the eighth-seeded Wildcats, 23-0, in five innings via mercy rule in a West Virginia Class 1A Region 1 Tournament Game Wednesday evening at Bowman Field.

“Today was definitely a great start to the postseason,” Madonna (21-4) head coach TJ Miller said. “I’m just glad we were finally able to play after having two days off. We played a great game. We hit the ball exceptionally well, and Mat Geer pitched a great game on the mound. He had 10 strikeouts without any walks, that is what you want to see and defensively we were solid.”
