HOUSTON — The Houston Astros ’ starting rotation suffered a big blow on Sunday as manager Joe Espada announced that right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski will undergo Tommy John surgery and will be out for the year.
The surgery will cut short the first year Wesneski was pitching for his hometown team. The Cy Fair High School product came to the Astros from the Chicago Cubs, along with Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith in the trade that sent Kyle Tucker to Chicago.
“In Milwaukee, I felt better,” Wesneski said. “Next day, I felt great. I was super pumped about it. Got on the airplane, landed at home in Houston and it just started swelling up. Off day only got worse.”
