MONTROSE, MI -- The mayor of Montrose has called a special City Council meeting to consider the firing of the city manager and treasurer but isn’t talking about what’s driving the discussion.

Mayor Thomas J. Banks said an attorney for the city advised him not to discuss the issues behind the potential termination of City Manager Barbara Valentine, who started working here in January, and Treasurer Nicole Moore, whom the council hired just this month.

In a Facebook post, Banks wrote, “I hear there are growing concerns regarding events that have recently occurred in city government.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss them in specifics at this time ... Please trust that I and the rest of council are aware and on top of things and when we can we will allow you in on actions being considered.”
