The Battle Ground City Council on Monday approved an ordinance that will allow the Washington State Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit of West Main Street to 30 mph.

The road — also known as state Highway 502 — has been noted as a site of frequent crashes as people turn east from the neighborhood onto Main Street. The current speed limit is 40 mph from state Highway 503, or 10th Avenue, west to Northwest 30th Avenue, where it changes to 50 mph.

Based on a speed study and crash analysis , WSDOT previously suggested lowering the speed limit on West Main Street to 30 mph from Albertsons to the intersection with Highway 503.

With Monday’s vote, the council greenlit WSDOT’s plan to change the speed limit.
