A motion to sever the cases against Atlantic City's mayor and schools superintendent accused of abusing their teenage daughter will now be heard next month, according to court officials.

Marty Small Sr., 51, and his wife, La'Quetta Small, 48, are scheduled to appear in front of Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury at 9 a.m. June 16. The couple were originally expected to appear Thursday.

The Smalls are each charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Mayor Small also is charged with terroristic threats and aggravated assault. Both pleaded not guilty Oct. 10.

The couple were last in court April 15 as their attorneys argued to have the charges against them dropped, claiming they were only trying to protect their child from her boyfriend.
