WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump is delaying a 50% tariff on European Union goods by over a month to buy time for "serious" negotiations.

Trump told reporters on Sunday that he spoke with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as he left Morristown, New Jersey, to return to Washington.

She asked for an extension on the June 1st date and she said she wants to get down to serious negotiation. July 9th would be the date. That was the date she requested. Could we move it from June 1st to July 9th and I agreed to do that, and that she said we will rapidly get together and see if we can work something out."

On Friday, Trump had threatened to impose a 50% tariff, saying the EU was "very difficult to deal with."
