PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) - New York is launching its blue-green algae tracker for the summer.
NY-HABS tracks Harmful Algae Blooms - or HABs. It’s a resource for New Yorkers to track or report blooms in their area to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The website includes a map and reporting system as well as current and historical data on cyanobacteria.
The DEC says blooms are likely caused by excess nutrients, sunlight, low and calm water, and warm temperatures. Swimming in water with algae blooms can be dangerous for you and your pets.
The Vermont Health Department also has an algae tracker that will be live in late June.
