BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — In 1969, Indiana University’s mascot, a wooly bison, disappeared from the public eye. For the 56 years since that disappearance, every glimpse at Indiana’s state seal — which features a bison — brought back grief and trauma to IU alumni who lost their beloved mascot.
But now, heralded by only two stoic words — “I’m Back” — the mascot returns.
In a dramatic video IU announced their bison mascot, now dubbed Hoosier, is returning to campus.
Last year, the IU student congress demanded the return of the iconic bison. They acknowledge that at the time the bison looked more like a minotaur chases you through a labyrinth than a companion to cheer the Hoosiers on. However, it’s possible to change a grizzly beast into a lovable friend.
