PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- An internal memo is laying out a worst-case scenario for the future of city services in Providence if state lawmakers don't allow the city to exceed the state-mandated tax levy to balance its next budget.
In a letter from Chief Operating Officer Courtney Hawkins sent to department directors on Tuesday, Hawkins said that if the tax levy bill were not passed and signed by Gov. Dan McKee by June 16, the City Council "may not be able to move forward with the first passage of the budget."
The "projected reductions" estimated that about 10% of the municipal workforce would be eliminated across city departments, and would result in more than $7 million in cuts, totaling 92 positions, according to Hawkins. The cuts would still need to be negotiated with the City Counci
