COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTV) - Authorities have identified a body found floating over the weekend in a South Carolina river, officials said Tuesday.

On Tuesday, May 27, the Columbia Police Department said a body found floating in the Congaree River days before had been identified as 18-year-old Donaven Dempsey. The teen, a student at the University of South Carolina, had been missing since May 8 .

Dempsey’s body was found in the river in Richland County , where Columbia is located, around noon on Sunday, May 25. Authorities reportedly found his body in the water near a boat landing along Highway 601.

Dempsey was dead when authorities found him, officials said. It was not immediately clear how he died.
