Former NBA star Shawn Kemp pleaded guilty Tuesday to an assault charge stemming from a 2023 shooting in a mall parking lot in Washington state.

The plea was reached just before jury selection was to begin.

The shooting occurred at the Tacoma Mall on March 8, 2023. Kemp told police his car had been broken into and several items were stolen.

He said his cellphone was missing and that he tracked it down, asking the people in an Toyota 4Runner if they had it, authorities said. They drove away and Kemp followed them to the mall and again confronted the people in the SUV. Kemp claimed a rear window rolled down and someone inside shot at him. Kemp said he then went back by his car and returned fire in self-defense at the SUV and another vehicle. No one was injured in the shooting.
