DES MOINES, Iowa —

What began as one Grinnell mother’s heartbreaking journey has become a new state law in Iowa. On Tuesday, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed "Mason’s Law," legislation that allows pediatric hospice homes to open in Iowa for the first time.

The law is named after Mason Sieck, a 7-year-old boy from Grinnell whose final days inspired a movement. Mason’s mom, Shanna Sieck, has been at the heart of the fight.

Mason was diagnosed with Gardner syndrome at age 2 — a rare disorder that led to painful tumors throughout his body. After Mason's seventh birthday, doctors told the Siecks there was nothing more they could do and that Mason needed hospice care.

That's when Shanna Sieck learned that Iowa had limited options. She could only find in-home or hospital hospice.
