FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Nearly 40 people were arrested and accused of driving under the influence last weekend, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP says they were tracking down illegal street racing, reckless driving, and impaired driving throughout Memorial Day weekend.

As a result, CHP reports 39 people were arrested and charged with DUI, 493 people were cited for speeding; 12 of them for speeding over 100 mph, 32 people were cited and accused of "distracted driving," 49 were cited for not wearing seatbelts, 55 vehicles were impounded and 17 people were arrested - but not accused of DUI.

Officers add they also gave warnings to 164 drivers to help them "correct driving behavior before it becomes a danger."
