HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) - Beaufort County Council agreed to a new plan to renovate Highway 278 Tuesday night after years of back and forth on the issue.

After a lengthy public comment period, the council voted 8-2 to pass an amendment that will allow the renovations to get underway as long as the South Carolina State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) agrees to the terms.

"It calls for a new three-lane eastbound only bridge starting from Moss Creek extending parallel to the South of the existing eastbound span to Pinckney Island and continuing eastbound three lanes all the way to Windmill Harbor," State Sen. Tom Davis (SC-46), said of the plan council approved.

However, the plan that passed hasn't always been the primary option.
