Warren Police Commissioner Eric Hawkins said he stands by his department’s police pursuit policy in the wake of a high speed chase that resulted in the death of an innocent Hazel Park woman May 24.

Wendy Drew, 71, was traveling on Nine Mile Road through the intersection at Van Dyke Avenue when her vehicle was struck by a Chrysler 300 driven by Anthony Grier, who was traveling at a high rate of speed while fleeing police and allegedly did not stop for a red traffic signal. Grier also struck another vehicle whose occupant was not seriously injured.

At the time he was being pursued by a marked Warren police patrol car with flashers and siren engaged for about five minutes at speeds that at times exceeded 100 mph, according to Hawkins.

Drew was transported to a local hospital where she was
