With rising temperatures in Las Vegas comes an increased threat: a growing mosquito population.

The Southern Nevada Health District is calling on residents to help reduce mosquito numbers throughout the region and safeguard against diseases transmitted by these insects.

To avoid mosquito bites, residents should apply insect repellent containing compounds such as oil of lemon eucalyptus, dress in loose-fitting long sleeves and pants and make sure doors and windows have intact screens without gaps or damage, the health district said.

Health officials additionally said residents can reduce their exposure to mosquito-transmitted diseases by removing standing water and other potential breeding sites outside their home.
