Rainbow Pride of West Virginia and Huntington Pride are hosting several events in June to celebrate Pride Month. With local pride events scheduled statewide, Pride Month celebrations have evolved since Charleston's first LGBTQ+ pride parade in 1997.
This month also marks the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, when the LGBTQ+ community first rose up, protesting against police brutality and attacks on gay bars. These riots set the tone for present day protests, and Pride Month itself.
