MCDONOUGH COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) - Mosquito testing in McDonough County tested positive for West Nile virus by a mosquito in Bushnell, Illinois.

Testing begins in May every year, with traps set up throughout the county.

The West Nile virus is established in the area, but is not usually found this early in the season.

“Last year, it was not until Aug. 15 until we found our first positive sample,” said Stefanie Johnson, environmental health director at the McDonough County Health Department.

While it is not something to ignore when spending time outside, there are a few steps you can take to mitigate your risk.
