PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Pinellas County will stop adding fluoride to its water supply by July 1, the county announced on Thursday.

Gov. DeSantis signed a law on May 15 requiring the removal of the mineral and other additives from state water supplies.

The county has been adding fluoride to water for over 20 years, beginning in 2004. The decision to do so was "based on overwhelming information at the time that fluoride is beneficial and not harmful to the dental health of most people," the county wrote in a press release.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent tooth decay, according to the National Institutes of Health.
