CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new report from Cradle Cincinnati reveals a troubling rise in infant deaths in Hamilton County, with unsafe sleep practices identified as a significant factor.

Health Commissioner Greg Kesterman highlighted a concerning increase in deaths associated with nursing pillows.

"In 2024 we had four deaths associated with nursing pillows when compared to the last 10 years we had 10 deaths. So we saw a 40% increase," said Kesterman.

Kesterman explained that nursing pillows should only be used during breastfeeding or nursing and not left in a crib when a baby is sleeping.

"Unfortunately parents sometimes will leave a child unattended with their nursing pillow and sometimes in those instances the little ones fall asleep and sometimes that causes suffocation," he said.
