PHOENIX — An algae bloom is affecting Apache Lake, according to officials with the Tonto National Forest.

Some algae blooms can pose risks to public health, aquatic health, or the environment and officials are warning people to stay out of the water.

"DO NOT DRINK or use this water for cooking. AVOID EATING FISH from the water until the bloom is dissipated as toxins can build up in fish tissue. WHEN IN DOUBT, STAY OUT," officials said.

The algae were discovered during routine sampling when officials saw a bright green section of the lake. Tests came back as positive for Dolichospermum, a cyanobacterium which is a human health concern, officials said.
