The man killed following a police chase last night in East Oakland was Marvin Boomer, a beloved Castlemont High School teacher and mentor who was described by colleagues as a great leader and colleague with many accomplishments, The Oaklandside has learned.
Boomer was walking with his partner on a sidewalk on E. 21st Street at 12th Avenue, in the area between the Clinton and San Antonio neighborhoods when a suspect who was fleeing the CHP crashed into a fire hydrant. The hydrant broke off and struck Boomer. According to witnesses who checked on him after the collision, he died immediately.
Castlemont teachers were notified of their colleague’s death on Thursday afternoon, on the last day of school, around the time that the students were leaving for the summer.
