COMMACK, N.Y. — A tragic incident in Commack, Long Island, resulted in the death of a man and left another injured when a dumpster they were sleeping in was emptied into a garbage truck early Thursday morning, according to Suffolk County police.

The two men were found in the dumpster at a shopping plaza when it was emptied into the truck. The truck later stopped at William Rogers Middle School in Kings Park, nearly six miles away, where the grim discovery was made around 6:30 a.m.

Authorities reported that one man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was rescued from the back of the truck and taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment of a leg injury.

Police stated that the medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death. However, they indicated that they do not believe the deceased man was dead prior to being dumped into the truck.

The identities of the men have not been released, but police confirmed that both were believed to have been sleeping in the dumpster at the time of the incident.

In response to the emergency situation, school officials at William Rogers Middle School sent a message to parents, clarifying that the emergency response was “completely unrelated” to the school. They assured parents that there was no threat to students or staff, and that classes were operating as usual.
