Michigan voters turned out in record numbers for Tuesday's general election, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson confirmed in a social media post Wednesday.

More than 5.6 million Michiganders voted, or 79% of active voters in the state, Benson said. The turnout topped the 5.5 million people who voted in 2020 presidential election.

“Michiganders were able to cast their ballots safely, securely and conveniently. As in past elections, we saw thousands of new voters register and vote on Election Day, nearly 22,000 overall, and many were in East Lansing, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and here in Detroit,” Benson said in a news conference earl
