It feels so good to be happy — when everything in life is going right, you’re laughing with friends, embracing a loved one or savoring success.
But happiness is elusive for many people. There’s been a “significant increase” in the percentage of U.S. adults experiencing anxiety and depression, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported .
Those negative feelings are highest among adults under 30, and higher among women than men.
When it comes to the world’s happiest countries, the U.S. has fallen to 24th place — its lowest position ever, according to the 2025 World Happiness Report . Researchers cited factors including many people dining alone, living by themselves and not having anyone they could count on for social support for the low scores.
