CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Friday as strong thunderstorms impact the Carolinas .

At 11:55 p.m. Friday, 494 flights were delayed at Charlotte Douglas, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . An additional 93 flights were canceled at Charlotte's airport. More delays were possible as the storms moved into the Queen City with heavy rain and gusty winds that prevented air travel.

An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that the vast majority of delays were due to weather.
