NEW YORK (PIX11) --- A Manhattan man will be spending decades behind bars for stabbing a transgender woman outside a homeless shelter on Randall's Island two years ago, authorities said Friday.

Jesse Diaz Ramos, 33, was sentenced to 25 years in state prison after a jury convicted him of attempted murder as a hate crime and assault earlier this month, prosecutors said.

Ramos attacked the 32-year-old victim while she was waiting at a bus stop near the Randall's Island homeless shelter in July 2023, prosecutors said.

Ramos hurled an anti-gay slur and pulled a knife after the two exchanged punches. The defendant then stabbed the woman in the left side of her chest, according to court records.
