WASHINGTON — As wildfires rage in Canada, smoke is drifting into the U.S., and also the D.C. Metro area through at least Tuesday.

The fires have forced the evacuation of at least 17,000 people in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the western and central regions of Canada.

These intense fires are sending hazardous smoke toward the U.S. in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes areas. The smoke will continue to drift over to areas such as Minneapolis, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Chicago and Detroit, where air some air quality alerts are going into effect. The wildfire smoke also continues to spread south and east on the upper-level atmospheric winds to the Mid-Atlantic to other areas such as DC, Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
