CROWN POINT — A Hammond man is on trial for the murder of a 49-year-old bystander who was struck by a bullet after the defendant fired shots at a romantic rival last year inside an East Chicago gas station.
The jury heard their final day of testimony Friday in the trial of Maurice Berry Jr., 22, who was charged in April 2024 with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, operating a loaded machine gun, possession of a machine gun and misdemeanor theft.
Berry allegedly shot Javier Olvera-Aguilar, of East Chicago, March 30, 2024, inside a BP gas station at 4502 Indianapolis Blvd. while he was supposedly aiming for the other victim whom witnesses identified as his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend, according to evidence and testimony presented at trial.
