NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A man has been sentenced to life in prison for a 2019 shooting that left one teenager dead and another seriously injured in New Bedford.

Kevin Edwards, of Fall River, was convicted two weeks ago of murder, assault and battery and several gun-related charges.

In October 2019, he opened fire on two teenagers along Ashley Boulevard, killing 17-year-old Paul Callazo-Ruiz and paralyzing a 19-year-old.

Prosecutors said Edwards snuck up behind the teens and fired six shots with the intent to kill both. Callazo-Ruiz was pronounced dead in the backyard of Edwards' co-defendant, Mauricio Pineda.

Pineda had been scheduled to be sentenced on the same charges, along with accessory to murder before the fact, illegal firearm possession and two counts of unlawfully carrying
