DES MOINES, Iowa —
A group of Iowa landowners is calling on Gov. Kim Reynolds to sign a bill they say would strengthen private property rights.
The legislation, House File 639 , would restrict companies from using eminent domain to build pipeline projects unless they qualify as a "common carrier." To qualify, companies would need to agree to serve the public fairly and transport things for other people or companies, not just themselves.
Governor Reynolds has roughly two weeks to make a decision.
"I'm asking you today to sign into law House File 639," landowner Marty Maher said during a press conference Friday.
Some Iowa farmers say the bill would help level the playing field for property owners.
