Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Evan Phillips is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will end his season and likely sideline him for most of the next year. Manager Dave Roberts announced the news on Friday, confirming that the surgery is scheduled for June 4.

Phillips, 30, began the 2025 season on the injured list due to a partially torn rotator cuff sustained during last year's postseason. He returned to action in late April, making seven scoreless appearances and striking out six batters in 5.2 innings. However, he was placed back on the injured list on May 7 due to right forearm discomfort.

Initially, Roberts expressed optimism about Phillips' recovery, stating, "Could he have pitched today? Absolutely. I just don't know — no one knows how he would respond going forward." But as the weeks progressed, concerns grew. "It’s starting to get a little concerning," Roberts admitted earlier this week.

Despite attempts to resume throwing, Phillips experienced pain during a recent catch session, leading to the decision for surgery. This marks a significant loss for the Dodgers, as Phillips has been a key figure in their bullpen since joining the team midway through the 2021 season. He has a career ERA of 2.22 with 221 strikeouts over 201 appearances for Los Angeles.

The injury comes at a challenging time for the Dodgers, who are already dealing with a slew of pitching injuries. Currently, the team is without 13 pitchers just two months into the season. In response to the mounting injuries, the Dodgers traded for Cincinnati Reds reliever Alexis Diaz on Thursday, transferring Phillips to the 60-day injured list.

In addition to Phillips' situation, the Dodgers are also facing challenges with star player Mookie Betts. Betts was scratched from the lineup for Friday's game against the New York Yankees due to a stubbed toe. Roberts indicated that Betts would undergo X-rays and is considered day-to-day.

As the Dodgers navigate these setbacks, the focus will be on recovery and finding ways to maintain competitiveness in the league.
