COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - A bill designed to better protect Texas law enforcement is one step away from becoming law.

After passing in both the House and the Senate, House Bill 2217 - filed by local representative Trey Wharton- is on its way to Governor Gregg Abbott’s desk.

Those who helped the movement called it a milestone.

Rep. Wharton (R-District 12) told KBTX, “I did get a little bit of moisture in my eyes when that happened because I knew what it meant to so many people.”

The bill creates a grant program so that departments big and small can outfit patrol vehicles with bullet-resistant glass. At the Texas A&M University Police Department (UPD), several vehicles have already been upgraded through Operation Safe Shield .
