Alice, North Dakota, was founded in 1900 and is named for Alice Carpenter Lewis, the wife of Robert Steele Lewis. Alice was born Dec. 12, 1857, in Monticello, Minnesota, to Judge George Carpenter and his wife, Maria (Williams). She met Robert, who was born in 1856 in Tennessee and moved to Minnesota just seven years later.
