Devin Harjes, an actor known for his work on shows like "Boardwalk Empire" and "Manifest," has died after a battle with cancer. He was 41.

A representative for Harjes, David Williams, confirmed to USA TODAY that the actor died on May 27 at Mount Sinai West Hospital in New York from cancer complications. He was diagnosed in the winter.

"He was an artist of great conviction who never gave less than one hundred percent to any role he undertook," Williams said.

"As a person, he was generous, kind, understanding and devoted to his family and friends, a great horseback rider and had a magic way with all animals. He was at home in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains, the plains of west Texas or the middle of Hell's Kitchen. He will be missed."

Harjes' memorable roles included boxer Jack Dempsey on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire." He also appeared in episodes of shows like "Daredevil," "Gotham," "Elementary," "Blue Bloods" and "Orange is the New Black," and he played Pete Baylor on "Manifest."

According to an obituary posted on Harjes' website, the actor was born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1983 and started his career on stage in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, starring in plays like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," before moving to New York City.

He is survived by his parents, sister, nephews, nieces, former wife, "beloved cat, Maude" and "countless friends whose lives were brighter ... or at least more entertaining ... because of him," his obituary said.

Instead of flowers, Harjes' obituary asked for donations in his name to TKC Blessings to "support scholarships for children pursuing the arts — Devin's true passion in life."
