The Shenandoah County sheriff refutes a former deputy’s claim that he unlawfully fired the officer in 2024 over his handling of an alcohol-related crash.

Sheriff Timothy Carter terminated then-Deputy Jacob T. Unger from employment with the law enforcement agency on April 22, 2024. Unger started working in the agency in December 2021.

Carter also sought to have Unger’s state certification to serve as a law enforcement officer revoked. Unger appealed the revocation to the Department of Criminal Justice Services. The committee considering the appeal held an evidentiary hearing behind closed doors and then a separate discussion, also not in public, and reinstated Unger’s certification on Dec. 5.
