BRENHAM, Texas (KBTX) - Local heroes were recognized Saturday for their efforts and bravery during the rescue attempt of a 10-year-old Brenham girl on May 5.

The city of Brenham gathered to grieve the loss of Devah Woods , a 10-year-old girl who was swept away during a heavy storm.

Devah and her sister were swept into flood waters near the Burleson Street Bridge after getting off the school bus. That’s when Charles “Alvin” Rogers and Dave DeLorm leapt into the rising waters in an attempt to save the girls.

“I jumped in the water and tried to save both of them,” Rogers told KBTX several days after the tragedy. “I had both of them when I came out the water, but the current being so tough, I couldn’t save both of them. One got away from me.”

First responders worked late into the night
