Israeli artillery shells struck tents sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis on Sunday, killing three and wounding at least 30, according to Nasser Hospital.

People fled the strike site in panic as a plume of smoke rose above scattered rubble near the blast.

Some of the wounded were carried in blankets, others were rushed to hospitals in the back of pickup trucks as ambulances pushed through the chaos.

At Nasser Hospital, blood stained the floor of the packed emergency room where the wounded laid on hospital beds, many with bandaged limbs. A child laid on a bed with an amputated leg, oxygen mask over his face.

“This child is seven years old with an amputation,” said Raul Ingertis, a Spanish emergency doctor with the World Health Organization at Nasser Hospital.

Ingertis said he had to treat many wounded, including a child with brain matter coming out of his head.

"We don’t know how to handle the situation. This needs to stop now.”
