WASHINGTON — It's been four years since D.C. started work on the former Dave Thomas Circle, and Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to reveal the finished project.
Renamed Mamie “Peanut” Johnson Plaza in 2023, the area refers to the intersection of New York Avenue, Florida Avenue and First Street Northeast. It was notorious for heavy traffic and well-known for the Wendy's that sat in the center. That is, until the fast food chain location's land was transferred to the District by eminent domain in 2021, kicking off the project to revamp the intersection.
In February 2021 , the District Department of Transportation published its plan for Mamie Johnson Plaza. According to the initial plan, the completed project would include these changes:
