In a shocking incident, eleven people were stabbed at a church-run homeless shelter in Salem, Oregon, on Sunday evening. The attack occurred at the Union Gospel Mission, located directly across from the local police headquarters. Authorities reported that the stabbing took place around 7:15 p.m., leaving multiple victims with varying degrees of injuries.
Among the wounded is at least one staff member from the mission. All victims were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect, who has been taken into custody, had checked into the mission the previous night and was preparing to stay for a second night when the violence erupted.
Craig Smith, the Executive Director of Union Gospel Mission, stated, "Something … set him off, and he evidently had a knife in his bag." He confirmed that the entire incident was captured on video, which is now being shared with law enforcement for further investigation.
The attack occurred at the Men’s Mission, a facility that opened in 2021, a few blocks away from the older mission established in the 1960s. The mission aims to assist homeless individuals and families, providing support through faith-based programs.
Angela Hedrick, a spokesperson for the Salem Police Department, noted, "This is a very fresh incident, and detectives are gathering the facts." As of now, no details have been released regarding the suspect's identity or the specific charges he may face.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the suspect being apprehended by police on the street following the incident. The Union Gospel Mission, founded in 1952 by local Christian businessmen, has been dedicated to helping those in need in the community.
