AUSTIN, Texas — It’s the final day of the Texas legislative session, and lawmakers are working until the last minute to push major bills through. Measures that could affect everything from immigration enforcement to property tax relief are now in Gov. Greg Abbott’s hands.

One of the latest bills to reach his desk is Senate Bill 8, which would require sheriff’s offices with jails to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement under a program known as 287(g). Currently, participation in the program is optional.
