Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, released large plumes of ash and smoke Monday following a surge in volcanic activity, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
Footage captured on Monday shows thick, grey clouds billowing from the volcano’s southeast crater on the eastern coast of Sicily.
A volcanic tremor was detected on Sunday night, gradually intensifying and peaking shortly before 3 a.m. local time on Monday.
The INGV reported that Etna had been experiencing “explosions of growing intensity” in recent weeks, with particularly frequent and powerful eruptions throughout May.
No deaths or injuries have been reported.
Mount Etna erupts several times a year and is closely monitored due to its proximity to populated areas.
