61-year-old Michael Shanks has been arrested and booked into the Forrest County Jail on a charge of First Degree Murder in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred on Friday, May 30.

The shooting took place at approximately 1:55 p.m. near the intersection of East 9th Street and Dewey Street. Investigators say two male family members were involved in an altercation that quickly escalated into gunfire. One of the men was shot and transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Hattiesburg Police Department immediately issued an active warrant for Shanks’ arrest. Authorities say the incident was an isolated altercation and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
