The Ridgeland Police Department (RPD) has issued a warning about a phone scam targeting residents in the healthcare profession. Scammers are impersonating members of the Mississippi Medical Board or RPD law enforcement officers in an attempt to extort money or steal personal information.
According to RPD, the scammers are using various tactics, including claiming the victim is under subpoena to give expert witness testimony in a court case, or stating the victim is in violation of a subpoena and that an arrest warrant has been issued. The scammers then instruct victims to pay a “fine” or “bond” via wire transfer to avoid prosecution or the suspension of their medical license.
Authorities warn that scammers can easily “spoof” phone numbers and the names of agents to make their calls appea
