Police in Danville, Virginia, announced a suspect is in custody after a June 1 shooting that left one person dead and four others injured.
Juwan Montel Baker, 26, has been arrested for alleged involvement in the shooting, during which 22-year-old Jay’Shaun Tiejae White was killed, the Danville Police Department said in a media release.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. local time on June 1, officials responded to reports of multiple shots fired on Carver Drive in Danville − which is along the state's southern border with North Carolina − police said.
White, who was sitting in the passenger seat of a Chrysler sedan, suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Four others were also injured in the shooting and treated at an area hospital.
Baker did not have an attorney listed in the Virginia Judiciary case system.
Danville shooting occurred during outdoor gathering, police say
Police said the initial investigation found that the shooting occurred during a "large outdoor gathering."
Shots were exchanged between the Chrysler sedan and other individuals at the gathering, authorities said.
The suspected driver of the Chrysler, a 26-year-old, was found with a gunshot wound on a nearby street and transported by first responders to an area hospital, police said.
Later, three other individuals − a 31-year-old male, a 25-year-old male and a 19-year-old female − arrived at the hospital with injuries from gunfire, according to police.
The female was treated and released. The male victims were transported to other medical facilities for treatment.
Suspect charged, more arrests likely, police say
Baker was a passenger in the Chrysler sedan, police said.
Around 10 p.m. local time on June 1, Danville police announced that Baker had been arrested.
He was charged with three counts each of discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle, malicious wounding and using of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to police.
The investigation into the shooting is still active, and police said more arrests and charges are likely.
