One person is dead after being shot outside an American Legion post in Columbus, according to authorities.

The homicide occurred around 1:45 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of the American Legion in the 4000 block of Cusseta Road, according to authorities.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the victim as Berry Tyree Benton, 37. Benton suffered one gunshot wound to the chest, according to Bryan.

The Columbus Police Department said the Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting, according to a post on the department’s X page .
