GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Update (Monday, June 2): Tennessee Highway Patrol said "early indications" suggest a medical emergency contributed to a serious crash on Parkway in Gatlinburg Sunday evening.

THP said around 4:20 p.m. , a southbound minivan accelerated unexpectedly, hitting a pedestrian in the crosswalk before colliding with several other cars. According to THP, the impact caused one of the vehicles to hit a roadside sign, which then fell and injured a second pedestrian on the sidewalk.

"Early indications suggest the possibility of a medical emergency contributing to the crash," THP said in a release Monday morning. "The case remains under investigation, and findings will be turned over to the District Attorney General’s Office for review."
