WASHINGTON — What was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo took a tense turn Saturday after a fight broke out between two adults, prompting police to respond.
Just after 4 p.m., the Smithsonian’s National Zoo Park Police were alerted to an altercation on zoo grounds. Authorities say the situation quickly escalated with reports of a potential threat circulating among zoogoers.
Out of an abundance of caution, a shelter-in-place was issued just six minutes later, with zoo staff and officers working quickly to secure the area and protect visitors, staff and animals.
