WASHINGTON — What was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo took a tense turn Saturday after a fight broke out between two adults, prompting police to respond.

Just after 4 p.m., the Smithsonian’s National Zoo Park Police were alerted to an altercation on zoo grounds. Authorities say the situation quickly escalated with reports of a potential threat circulating among zoogoers.

Out of an abundance of caution, a shelter-in-place was issued just six minutes later, with zoo staff and officers working quickly to secure the area and protect visitors, staff and animals.

Rumors of an active shooter spread on social media, leading to heightened anxiety. However, D.C. Police later posted an update on X , formerly known as Twitter, clarifying the situation:
