A federal jury convicted a former MBTA Transit Police sergeant Thursday of helping a fellow officer falsify a report to cover up the unprovoked beating of a homeless man at Ashmont Station in 2018.

After an eight-day trial in US District Court in Boston, David S. Finnerty, 49, of Rutland, was convicted of one count of aiding and abetting the filing of a false police report. Jurors, who deliberated for two days, acquitted Finnerty of a second count of filing a false report.

US District Chief Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV scheduled sentencing for Aug. 21.

The case had been closely watched in political and law enforcement circles because the federal charges were brought against Finnerty in August 2023 after Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden dropped similar charges 10 months earlier.
