BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Canadian wildfires have burned around 1.7 million acres across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.

So far, about 17,000 people have been ordered to evacuate, and more communities could be ordered to leave in the coming days if the fires continue to advance.

Evacuees are staying in hotels, shelters and with friends and family.

North Dakota’s Rolette County said they haven’t received any requests to house evacuees, but they have shelters ready if necessary.

Pembina County and the state Department of Emergency Services have not responded.

Manitoba government data shows that 98 of the province’s 106 wildfires started because of human activity. Four are under investigation, and four were started by lightning strikes.
